The WingsDove web site has a new look, which can be seen at www.wingsdove.com.  A few of the sections, such as Articles and Links have not been completely redecorated yet but we're very near the end of this project. (Don't you find that most men rarely if ever change the look and feel of their web sites, whereas most women like to make changes every so often?  I am no exception!)

Through partnerships with a couple of awesome and established PHP Programmers, WingsDove has recently added Content Management Programming to our list of CAN-DO's.  The www.sellbyownerlistings.com web site was designed and optimized by WingsDove designed: Hens-Teeth is doing the CMS Programming.  This site is still under construction and not all the functionality is in place just yet, but take a peak if you have a chance.

New WingsDove Web Design clients can choose to have F R E E  advertising either at the time of signing up for a Web site design or Web site optimization, or at the launch of the new or optimized Web site.  Existing clients interested in F R E E advertising for their business, organization or personal web site should contact me at by email or telephone at 847.299.4064.

Top 5 Tips for Choosing the Best Keywords

You've probably heard of people claiming significant traffic to their site after achieving a top ranking on Google or Yahoo. But sometimes you hear from someone else who also achieved a similar top ranking but they were disappointed when no one arrived at their site. How can two people achieve a top ranking and have such markedly different outcomes? Simple. The person in the first example selected a keyword or phrase that many people are searching on, and the second did not.

Unfortunately, it's all too easy to brainstorm your own list of keywords, only to find out later that they are not as popular as you first thought. Keyword popularity is essential to success in search engine marketing.

The question to ask yourself is how do you really know if you're optimizing your pages for keywords that Web surfers are looking for? There are several good techniques you can apply:

ALT Attributes (ALT Tags)

Alt tags are technically "alt attributes." They are text that you put in the HTML code to describe the image you're using. So let's say you sell chicken suit costumes; you might have a picture of a guy dressed up as a giant chicken on your site, and you might want to add alt attribute text that said something like "chicken suit" or "guy in chicken suit." The idea is that you would describe the image for people who have images turned off.  This was more important in the old days when people had slower connections, but it's coming back in vogue for people who browse the web on their BlackBerrys and other PDAs.  (As an aside, someone recently told me they love my newsletter being all text because it's the only one they can easily read on their BlackBerry!).  With images off, browsers will show the alt attribute text visibly on the page.  And for those who are visually impaired and are using a voice screen reader, the alt attribute text is read out loud so the person would know what the picture was about.

Doorway Pages or Advertising Pages, What Is The Difference?

I recently responded to a post in a popular search engine marketing forum that asked the question, "What is the difference between doorway pages and advertising pages?" In fact there have been quite a number of similar posts so far in the month of March. Therefore I decided that it would be a timely subject to write on.

Doorway Page Techniques Are Nothing New

If you have been around the search engine optimization (SEO) world for any length of time, you have most likely heard of "doorway" pages and questioned whether they are good or bad. Doorway pages have been around for awhile and because of the bad reputation they have, are often called by other names such as attraction pages, gateway pages, bridge pages and even more recently advertising pages. Their use, whether good or bad, ethical or non-ethical has been constantly debated since they were first employed.

What is a Doorway Page

A doorway page is typically a page created by a SEO or webmaster for the exclusive purpose of ranking well in the search engines. They usually consists of a lot of text that is stuffed with the keyword or phrases they are intended to promote and are not linked in to the regular navigational structure of the site. The basic idea is that they will rank well in the SERPs (search engine results pages) and a visitor will enter the site through that page, thus the reason why they are called doorways.

How Many Links Do You Need?

By Dan Thies, SEO Research Labs

We all know that link building is an important aspect of SEO. Most of the websites I look at are reasonably well optimized, at least in terms of "on page" factors, but they're usually in terrible shape when it comes to links – both within the website and within the area of link popularity.

Among my students, one of the most frequently asked questions is "how many links do I need to get my site ranked better?" At SEO Research Labs, this question has been the subject of much study, of course. It's a simple question, but the answer can be complicated. Fortunately, the answer is usually "a lot less than you think."

In this article, I'll try to break the question down into bite-sized pieces, and give you the best answer we have based on our research and experience. I'll begin with three key concepts, and then give you some rules of thumb to guide you to your own answers.

Tips, Hints and Software from safe sources

Add New Programs to Your Menu Alphabetically
Windows 2000, Windows XP Home or Professional

Many people find it annoying that new programs and icons add themselves to the end of the start menu. Most of us would like to have them in alphabetical order. To arrange the items by name on your start menu, follow the instructions below:

1. Click Start, click All Programs, and then right-click on any folder or icon.

2. Click Sort by Name.

That's all there is to it. Now your start menu is organized alphabetically - like magic!
